I find people, especially in social situations, infinitely entertaining. I used to employ photo references, but sketching in pen & ink, exaggerating features, capturing facial expressions and body language, provides a looser and in most ways a truer image. I keep a sketchbook and pen at hand at all times.
Watercolor is my preferred medium to turn the raw material of sketches into paintings, because it can look like it is also applied quickly. As I combine the sketches of individuals into groups, I’m reminded of the pleasure I took in first drawing them. The second pleasure is more like solving a puzzle: creating a composition and choosing which colors and values suit the subject and the mood. The goal is an expressive and loose painting that suggests a relationship among its subjects.
